Apparel Graphics | Nike
Each year Nike does an exclusive collection of footwear and apparel to commemorate the achievements of African-Americans. The theme for this collection was "A Call to Greatness", a look at how successive generations build on each other's accomplishments. For inspiration, we looked to the art of Hale Woodruff, an African-American artist from the early twentieth century.
"Returning Home" by Hale Woodruff was our north star for the visual direction.
Custom Lettering and Illustration
For the footwear and apparel graphics, we created custom icons and typography in the woodcut style of Hale Woodruff. There were three sets of icons, each representing a generation of African-American pioneers in basketball. A set for Dr. J, one for Michael Jordan, and another for Kobe Bryant.
Monogram & Patches
We applied custom icons and typography to a limited edition jacket. It sported patches on the sleeve for each player's accomplishments, a Black History Month monogram on the front, and a limited edition patch on the back featuring the icon pattern in the shape of a basketball.
Application of Graphics
We applied the custom icon pattern to a special line of sneakers. The line up included pairs of Star Players, Air Force 1‘s, Air Jordan‘s, and Zoom Kobe VI‘s.
